PSA Annual Meeting

The Photoluminescent Safety Association held its annual conference in early November. The conference was co-located with the annual meeting of the Firestop Contractors International Association (FCIA). The PSA submitted an article titled "Getting Out in a High-Rise Emergency, No Guessing!" to the Life Safety Digest, a publication of the FCIA. We all know high-rise fires will continue, but your firestop products, in tandem with a photoluminescent marking system, can help reduce the number of deaths and injuries in those fires. The PSA and its members look forward to working with you and all FCIA members.

EverGlow TL300 Complies with UL1994, UL 410 & ASTM E2072 (2014)

EverGlow recently submitted samples of EverGlow TL300 Photoluminescent Epoxy Coating to Underwriters Laboratories to test for compliance with UL1994 - Standard for Luminous Egress Path Marking Systems and UL410 - Slip Resistance.

The following Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Test Report shows that EverGlow TL300 Epoxy Coating, when mixed and applied as we direct, and charged by LED, fluorescent, mercury vapor and metal halide, meets the performance requirements of UL1994, UL410 and ASTM E2072 (2014).

EverGlow TL300 Epoxy Coating is typically used to mark the stair nosings, and other walking surfaces (perimeter of landings & corridors, etc.) in the exit stairs of high rise buildings. EverGlow TL300 cannot be listed by UL since it is prepared and applied in the field.

EverGlow offers glass beads which are sometimes added to TL300, applied to the coating while it is curing. These UL tests indicate that the glass beads are not necessary for compliance with UL1994 and UL410. In fact, EverGlow no longer recommends the use of these glass beads unless they are sanded after the TL300 coating has completely cured.

EverGlow Exit Path Markings now listed by UL1994 to work properly with most common lighting technologies.

Underwriter's Laboratories recently tested and approved EverGlow Egress Path Markings for use with common lighting technologies:
- Fluorescent - 4,000 K color temperature
- LED - 2,700 K to 4,500 K
- Metal Halide - 4,000 K - 4,500 K
- Mercury-Vapor - 3,500 K to 4,000 K
- Halogen - 2,700 K - 3,000 K
- Incandescent - 2,700 K - 3,000 K

Review the EverGlow Technical Data Sheet for the use of UL1994 Listed Egress Path Markings with Various Lighting Sources.

EverGlow produces UL1994 Listed Exit Path Markings in HI150, HI300 and TL300 luminance grades and with different materials to meet or exceed the specific performance requirements for your installation. These signs and markings also meet CAN/ULC-S572 performance standards required for use in Canada. Data collected by UL and EverGlow clearly show that light sources that emit energy in the UV region of the electromagnetic spectrum charge strontium aluminum (SrAl) pigments much better than lighting sources that emit energy only in the visible blue portion of the spectrum. Electrical lighting manufacturers describe these colors as cool white, bright white, warm and soft white. Lamps and luminaires with higher color temperatures generally out-perform those with lower color temperatures.

OSHA cites 2009 International Fire Code as exit routes option.

The International Code Council announced this month that the US Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration now recognizes the 2009 IFC as an alternate compliance option for means of egress in OSHA standards.

OSHA Cites 2009 IFC as Exit Routes Option.

This ICC announcement can be found on the ICC website as an Adobe PDF document and download.

Richard Weiland, CEO of the International Code Council, thanked OSHA for recognizing the safety attributes of the IFC code as well as the professional expertise and science that goes into the code's development. Further, Mr. Weiland stated that OSHA's recognition of the IFC will save money by eliminating the need to demonstrate compliance with dual regulations, and by avoiding potential construction modifications due to conflicting codes.(EverGlow comment: OSHA has generally recognized the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code for this purpose; some parts of the IFC and NFPA 101 have conflicting language. Additionally, OSHA has traditionally preferred the manner that NFPA develops their ANSI approved Life Safety Code, to the way that the ICC develops their codes.)

EverGlow adds a new page on our website - (Non-Electrical) Photoluminescent Emergency Lighting.

Photoluminescent emergency lighting technology is non-electrical, 100% reliable and effective. EverGlow is pleased to present information from a variety of industry sources that consider (non-electrical) emergency lighting an important life safety component. We believe that emergency lighting is most effective when both electrical and non-electrical lighting technologies are employed. Most code and life safety experts agree.

We are seeking to provide an information resource that will bring together the best information from the lighting industry and life safety industry. EverGlow believes that there is no room for commercial interests that might try to confuse consumers or describe the advantages of one lighting technology over another without describing the disadvantages.

Although economic conditions might encourage facility managers to neglect maintenance of electrical emergency lighting, or discourage them from installing non-electrical emergency lighting, EverGlow believes that it is cost effective to replace electrical exit signs with photoluminescent electrical exit signs where there is sufficient and appropriate lighting available to properly charge photoluminescent signs.

Recycle Your Lighting! Photoluminescent exit signs absorb and store energy from interior lighting and sunlight; and they show the way to the exit when the electrical power and lighting fail during an evacuation. Photoluminescent exit signs don't cost energy dollars; they recycle your energy dollars.

You are never in the dark with EverGlow!

January 2010

EverGlow launches new "Recycle Your Lighting" program.

"Recycle your Lighting" is a simple reminder that electrical lighting can be used to energize or charge EverGlow Photoluminescent Emergency Lighting. The glow in the dark pigments used in our signs and markings absorb AND store light energy produced by electrical lighting and emits that light when the electrical power and normal lighting fail during emergency evacuations.

EverGlow Photoluminescent Emergency Lighting is both environmentally friendly and 100% reliable & effective, like no electrical lighting technology can be.

By local mandate across North America, electrical fluorescent lighting has been recycled for years, to capture the mercury in each lamp and to keep this hazardous material out of our landfills. EverGlow photoluminescent signs & markings consume ZERO energy (we capture and store the energy released by electrical lighting) and contain ZERO radioactive, toxic or vinyl components. Our signs and markers contain a minimum of 60% post consumer recycled aluminum; our acrylic films & tapes contain no dioxins or plasticizers; our coatings are low VOC.

September 2009

EverGlow adds an information page to our website - Replace Radioactive Tritium Exit Signs with Photoluminescent Exit Signs.

EverGlow has collected information on tritium exit signs so visitors to our websites can make a direct comparison between radioluminescent and photoluminescent exit sign technologies.

EverGlow GmbH, EverGlow NA, and our associated companies do not manufacture radioactive tritium exit signs. EverGlow has never manufactured tritium exit signs (or other signs or markings) containing radioactive or toxic components. EverGlow (a registered trade mark of EverGlow GmbH, spelled with an upper case "G" and with a "w" at the end of the name) has been confused with Everglo (spelled with a lower case "g" and without the "w"). Everglo is a registered trade mark of a manufacturer of radioactive tritium exit signs.

EverGlow believes that electrical and non-electrical emergency lighting- exit signs and exit path markings- can and should be used to more clearly mark exits and paths of egress from buildings, airplanes, ships & marine work platforms, trains, tunnels and other structures. When installed, utilized and maintained properly, electrical and non-electrical technologies offer distinct advantages specific to the construction, installation location and intended use.

Photoluminescent and radioluminescent technologies are the only non-electrical and code compliant exit sign constructions available. EverGlow photoluminescent exit signs offer several advantages over tritium exit signs - ZERO radioactive or toxic components, virtual unlimited lifetime for interior installations (life of the building). And, EverGlow aluminum exit signs and frames are easily recycled.

There are significant risks associated with the radioactive tritium in radioluminescent exit signs. When those signs are abused or disposed of improperly, there is an adverse impact on the environment and those working around the contamination. For facility managers & owners, the potential for broken signs and lock-outs during the clean-up phase of the recovery means these signs should only be used where they are absolutely necessary.

There are an estimated 2,000,000 radioluminescent exit signs in use in the United States. Every year, 200,000 of those signs reach the expiration date printed on the sign. That is, the radioactive decay of the tritium in the signs is no longer sufficient to make the phosphor glow enough to meet code and performance requirements. Sales of radioactive tritium exit signs have decreased since the peak sales years 1988-1992. Some of these signs are being replaced with photoluminescent exit signs, some are being used beyond their expiration date, and some have been replaced by electrical LED exit signs.

March 2009

Model codes increase requirements for photoluminescent signs & markings.

The ICC, administrators of the International Codes and specifically the International Building Code (IBC) and the International Fire Code (IFC), and NFPA, the provider of the Life Safety Code (NFPA 101), have published the 2009 editions of their various model codes and standards.

All of the 2009 model codes have new and specific language to promote the use of NON-ELECTRICAL Exit Path Markings and Photoluminescent Signs & Markings to supplement electrical emergency lighting and signs. Officials responsible for fire and life safety now recognize that electrical lighting alone - normal lighting and emergency lighting - do not provide the full measure of evacuation safety provided by both electrical and non-electrical emergency lighting. To provide for safer & faster evacuations, the new code language provides emergency lighting for evacuations in full lighting, emergency lighting and totally dark conditions.

The new building and fire code language also requires building owners, facility managers, architects and engineers to identify and mark exits in high rise buildings more completely, more clearly and more reliably. If the model code language is adopted by the various jurisdictions around the country in essentially the form it is written, many existing and new high rise buildings will have photoluminescent exit path markings and signs installed.

The IBC & IFC (2009 Editions) require NON-ELECTRICAL exit path markings in new & existing high rise buildings having occupied floors more than 75 feet high:

  • Assembly - A1, A2, A3, A4, A5
  • Business - B
  • Educational - E
  • Institutional - I1, I2, I3, I4
  • Mercantile - M
  • Residential - R1

The NFPA 101 (2009 Edition) does not require exit path markings. If photoluminescent, or other NON-ELECTRICAL exit path markings are installed in high rise buildings, there are similar requirements for placement and performance as in the IBC and IFC.

EverGlow certifies zero energy consumption for all high performance products.

In response to the suspension of ENERGY STAR listings for energy efficient exit signs, EverGlow has begun to certify that all our high performance photoluminescent products consume ZERO energy.

EverGlow signs, markers, coatings and films are charged by sunlight and overhead lighting- they do not require attachment to the electric grid; they do not contribute to global warming. Our eco-friendly and responsible manufacturing processes also contribute to our record low impact on the environment. All high performance products are certified to be high in recycled content and also can be completely and safely recycled.

EverGlow recognizes that responsible building owners and facility managers are looking for safe, reliable and effective substitutes for electrical emergency lighting and exit signs. Our photoluminescent signs and markers are non-electric, meet all applicable building, fire and life safety codes and are important components of complete reliable and effective life safety systems.

April 2008 (revised February 2011)

ENERGY STAR Suspends Specification for EXIT Signs.

In November, 2007, the US Environmental Protection Agency notified all stakeholders that, effective 1 May 2008, the ENERGY STAR specification will be suspended because research indicates that the performance and longevity of (electrical) signs could be compromised if the input power demand is driven below five watts per sign. During the comment period for this change, a majority of stakeholders encouraged EPA to maintain the specification for exit signs. A majority of those who commented asked EPA to make a significant revision to the specification.

EPA indicated they might consider a revised ENERGY STAR program for Exit Signs as energy efficient technologies evolve, improve and mature. Photoluminescent exit signs can currently meet a more stringent specification and are the only lighting technology available today that meets the performance requirements of UL924 without the use of radioactive components or lamps and circuitry containing heavy metals. EverGlow exit signs contain no radioactive or toxic components.

EPA stated earlier that there are more than 100 million exit signs in buildings throughout the US. These signs operate 24 hours per day, 365 days per year and cost $1 billion annually to operate. Using energy efficient exit signs could save $15 - $20 per year per sign (compared to incandescent exit signs). This is a total savings of 800,000 megawatts of electricity and $70 million each year.

EPA, over the life of the EXIT Sign specification, encouraged building owners and facility managers to replace or convert many incandescent and fluorescent EXIT signs to LED, photoluminescent and radioluminescent lighting technology. The net result was a significant savings in electrical energy consumed by older exit signs. There is much more energy and money to be saved by replacing LED and any remaining electrical EXIT signs with photoluminescent EXIT signs, where appropriate. Note that EverGlow photoluminescent exit signs consume no electricity and require no lamps, batteries or wiring. There is virtually no maintenance required for our exit signs.

EverGlow NA Eliminates PVC Products in North America.

EverGlow NA has joined the growing list of companies that are phasing out the manufacture or sale of products containing polyvinyl chloride. Although PVC is not widely banned by legislation today, it is a product we voluntarily choose not to use. Further, there are significant problems with the durability of this product.

PVC, a plastic also know as polyvinyl chloride or vinyl, flexible vinyl or rigid vinyl, has been linked to a wide variety of health hazards through the release of toxic chemicals in landfills. When discarded, vinyl releases dioxins, among the most toxic of synthetic chemicals ever tested. Dioxins released from vinyl products can alter liver function, harm the immune and reproductive systems and cause cancer. Vinyl films contain plasticizers or softeners to increase their flexibility. These plasticizers most often contain a family of chemicals called phthalates. These chemicals can damage the liver, kidneys, lungs and reproductive system.

If improperly recycled, one PVC bottle can render 100,000 PET recycled bottles unusable. PVC content is often disguised in many products and its use in the sign industry is widespread because of the low cost of this film.

Evolution of photoluminescent markings in NYC.

This advertisement appeared recently in the New York City market. EverGlow and our marketing partners, Addlight and Franklin Service Group, have installed our aluminum signs and markers in many high rise office buildings as required by Local Law 26.

However, the competition has been busy installing tapes and films which do not have the same durability and adhesion that EverGlow products provide.

In far too many buildings, COMPETITIVE vinyl and laminated tapes and FILM PRODUCTS have FAILED on floors, handrails and obstacles.

Our goal is to provide safe, reliable, durable and long lasting products and installation, at a fair price, to the building owners and managers in NYC. We believe that photoluminescent safety signs and markings must remain in place to be of use during an emergency.
